Tucson: One of the Top Ten Cities
The May (1996)
issue of Hispanic Magazine ranks the
"Top 10 Cities for Hispanics" and Tucson ranked sixth among all U.S.
cities! The selection process involved ran king cities in accordance to
numerous complex educational, socio-economic, and political factors such
as Metropolitan demographics, quality of life, "friendliness towards
Hispanics in general," and leadership positions held by Hispanics in each
individua l community. The article cited that two out of seven Tucson City
Council Seats were held by Hispanics, namely Steve Leal and Jose Ibarra,
and that the husband and wife team of George and Mary Garcia heads the two
largest school districts in Tucson. Georg e is the superintendent of the
Tucson Unified School District, and Mary is superintendent of Sunnyside
