THE CENTER FOR ETHNIC STUDENT AFFAIRS... (CESA)

at the University of Utah provides support services, such as academic and vocational counseling and advice to ethnic, educationally disadvantaged, and other minority students. CESA insures that ethnic minority and educationally disadvantaged students have an opportunity to enjoy the benefits of a successful university education. CESA services which help students adjust to campus life include the following:

ACADEMIC PLANNING:


Assistance in developing an individualized program to increase basic academic skills, fulfill liberal education requirements and complete a chosen major.

SCHEDULING:

Quarterly assistance in selecting courses and designing a balanced course load.

EXPLORATION:

Individualized assistance in identifying personal interests, talents, and skills, then choosing and academic major.

COUNSELING:

Professional help with personal problems and the promotion of personal growth.


MANAGEMENT:

Assistance in time scheduling to ensure that academic work is accomplished while allowing time for personal activities.

SURCHARGE:

Payment of fees for tutoring services and preparatory classes for economically disadvantaged students.

CLASSES

Special sections of credit classes in career and life planning, enrichment courses and learning skills.

COORDINATION:

Working with campus agencies and graduate programs to ensure that students benefit from all University opportunities.

ORGANIZATIONS:

Headquartering ethnic student organizations - Asian American Student Organizations, African American Student Union, Hispanic Student Union, Intertribal Student Association, and Polynesian Student Association.

ETHNIC STUDIES PROGRAM:

This academic program offers an investigation and appreciation of ethnic cultures. Interdisciplinary courses which explore the hertiage of minority groups in the U.S. are offered to all University students.

INTERESTED IN A HEALTH SCIENCES CAREER:

The Ethnic Minority Student Health Science Center assists and encourages students who seek careers in medicine, pharmacy, nursing or health. To help interested students adjust to campus and academic life, the Center sponsors support programs. It also coordinates activities of the Health Science Organization through which students help each other meet personal and academic challenges.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT SERVICES:

Educational Opportunity Programs/Students, Support Services Project, 2075 Annex Building, (801) 581-7188.

The Student Support Services Project is federally funded to help students with low income or those with physical or learning disabilities to suceed at the University. Students must be accepted into the program to take advantage of its services. All services are free to eligible students.

SPECIAL CLASSES:

The program offers college- preparatroy classes and workshops in reading, math,, study, and college-survival skills. Some credit courses are available.

TUTORING:

Tutoring is offered in writing, mathematics, reading, and study skills. Tutorial assistance is also available for writing term papers in other subject areas.

ADVISING:

Elibible students recieve assistance with course selection, registration, and financial-aid applications.

COUNSELORS:

also help identify other campus resources to enable students to achieve their academic objectives.

TESTING:

Diagnostic testing is available to identify the need for academic skill development.

HIGH SCHOOL AND PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS....

THE FIRST STEPS.....

1) Talk with counselors in the office of High School and Prospective Student Services. They have admission applications and can answer questions about requirements scholarship, financial aid, and student life at the University.

2) Take a personalized tour of the campus and visit with faculty or academic advisors if you like.

3) Call, write or stop by today. The office is open weekdays 8 am to 5 pm.
